Research Groups
History of Philosophy Roundtable
Faculty and graduate students with interests in the history of philosophy meet biweekly at the History of Philosophy Roundtable, a forum for graduate students to present work in progress. Papers are distributed and read in advance so that there is ample time for extensive discussion and constructive feedback on graduate students' research. In the recent past, students have presented papers on Aristotle, Descartes, Hobbes, Spinoza, Reid, Hume, Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, and Husserl.
Undergraduate Philosophy Club
A vital and robust group, the student-run Undergraduate Philosophy Club offers a variety of extracurricular activities including:
- Coffee with a Professor (rotating faculty guests)
- Philosophy Debates (hosted by a faculty moderator, with student speakers and student choice of topic)
- Philosophy and Film nights (movie, pizza, open discussion afterward)
- Undergraduate Philosophy and History of Science Reading Group
Institute for Practical Ethics
Many philosophy students and faculty participate in the numerous activities of the Institute of Practical Ethics. IPE is an interdisciplinary group of researchers from across the university taking on the hard ethical questions arising from rapid technological and scientific change, and encouraging engagement on these topics by ethicists, scientists, and policymakers.
